A picturesque Royal Burgh, St Andrews at the centre of
the golf world, has a number of fine courses, including the famed
Old Course. It is also an ancient
seat of learning, where you will find Scotland's first
University,
(founded in 1411) set
amongst elegant, ivy clad buildings and delightful quadrangles and
gardens. St Andrews is relatively small, despite having city status,
with a population of 16,000. The University population (Staff and
students) numbers around 6,000.
